Ten misconceptions about choosing mobile phone

  1. Brand loyalty
  2. People get attached to a particular brand after using many products of that brand which creates a brand value; the unwillingness to get detached with that brand is called brand loyalty. Brand loyalty is present in every sector whether its electronics, consumer goods, telecom operator or cinemas and this is the main challenge faced by new companies to grab market share even if they are producing high quality products. But most commonly it is found in mobile phone devices.
If u roam around the world through internet then u can easily find that many fans of their royal company are praising even low quality products but bashing high quality products by other companies. Take the example of MWC-2009, as I already reported that MWC-2009 was rocked by two dazzling mobile announcement Samsung Omnia HD i8910 and SE IDOU both are much better than any Nokia Symbian phone to-date but royal consumer thinks that only Nokia can produce good Symbian phone which is ridiculous.
A good phone can’t be judged by only brand but by its potential. Nokia has produced many good phones earlier they are still market leader but Samsung has emerged as true innovator by introducing new and exciting feature in its phone. Even SE is also catching up, so it’s a good time to change the mind and move ahead of brand loyalty otherwise you will miss the best of all.
  3. Big is always better
  4. This is a common misconception that big is always better even companies are doing this trick. There are two things I want to discuss here first is Camera Mega Pixel race and second Screen size. Higher MP doesn’t always mean good image quality it just helps in printing large posters nothing else but downside is larger image size and nobody wants to keep 12MP or 10MP photos in his/her computer so it needs to resize to 1-2MP which is waste of time. Small size of mobile phone doesn’t permit to use larger sensor and high quality lens which is the driving force to get better quality images. Up to 5MP is good in a phone but above that you should think of buying a digital SLR. There are many 8MP cameraphones in the market without xenon flash so what’s the point of buying them since most of us shoot more indoor picture than outdoor.
Larger screen size doesn’t mean better quality. It is number of pixels and screen type which decide quality of screen. There are mainly two types of technology used in screen manufacture TFT and OLED later is much better in terms of contrast and color, it is also less power hungry because it doesn’t use backlight. Up to 2.4 inch QVGA ( 240 x 320 pixels) can be good but above 2.4 inch more pixels need to give same quality pictures like WQVGA (240 x 400), HVGA (320 x 480), nHD (360 x 640), VGA (480 x 640), WVGA (480 x 800).
  5. Better look means better build quality and durability
  6. Better look doesn’t mean better quality. Glossy and mirror finish can be achieved by low quality materials even some metallic looking body parts can be made of plastic and it can be highly prone to wear and tear. All companies have good and bad build quality phones in their portfolio but to pick the best you need to get user review about that phone.
  7. My friend has this so I want this
  8. Its not always true that your friend own best phone but since you are jealous of him so you too are going to buy the same phone.
  9. Someone told me that a this has that glitch so I won’t go for it
  10. Well unless this someone has tested that phone or has very good experience of mobile phone industry don’t trust him. Roam around the internet and read user review as well as reviews by some of the phone review sites but keep faith in user review because review sites are sometimes biased to a particular company.
  11. Wait for the price drop
  12. Well price will definitely going to drop over time but the utility you will gain by paying higher price in that time period has more value than the less price you will pay after sometime.
  13. Wait for the new phone to release
  14. If you think like that then your wait will never end because every time you want to buy a mobile phone there will always be a better announcement.
  15. Everything is always better
  16. This is common in today’s mobile industry to throw all features in single phone. Nokia is practicing it for so long but recently more companies have joined this league. But what if you are going to use only one of all the features like music, camera, GPS or long talking more frequently than other features. In that case it is better to choose a phone which is particularly focused on your desirable feature.
  17. Mobile can never replace camera, music player, GPS , notebooks etc.
  18. This was true 2-3 years back but now its not. Mobile device and notebooks are converging which resulted in netbook which will be further reduced to QWERTY + Touch screen mobile phones. For moderate shooting mobile camera is capable of satisfying anyone’s need but for professionals SLR will be a good choice. GPS, Music and wireless lan need no explanation here.
  19. Higher price means better phone
  20. Price depends upon many things like features, style, material, location etc. Some phone is cheap in Asia but costly in Europe and vice versa. Some company always charge heftier price for even low quality. So it is advisable to compare different options considering price and feature ratio.

Samsung "Omnia HD" = i8910

Samsung Omnia HD is the most promising device at MWC-2009. This is the first Symbian device which comes with OLED Capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 640 x 360 pixels, capable of displaying up to 16 million colors with 3.7 inch screen size. With 8MP camera on board it has industry's best video recording capability at 1024x720 resolution. It also includes geo-tagging, face and smile detection and WDR (Wide Dynamic Range) setting.

Samsung has released so many Symbian S60 devices but none became popular even powerhouse i8510 didn't become popular but in 2009 it seems that Samsung seriously wants to push Symbian into its devices. Omnia HD has best hardware and most popular OS on the go which shows clear vision of the company to provide best solutions. It has 3D hardware accelerator,
8 or 16GB of integrated memory, hot-swappable microSD card slot handling up to 16GB. DivX/XviD support, Accelerometer for screen auto rotate, Proximity sensor for auto screen turn-off and FM radio, Wi-Fi with DLNA, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP, a standard microUSB port, 3.5mm audio jack and TV-out, GPS receiver with A-GPS is aboard along with the optional Samsung Mobile Navigator by Route66, HSDPA (up to 7.2 Mbps) and HSUPA (up to 5.76 Mbps).

The success or failure of this phone will depend upon the price which is yet unknown. Samsung has successfully implemented its popular
TouchWiz homescreen plugin in Omnia HD but there is one thing on which Nokia has an edge over this monster and that is N-GAGE. This monster has 3D hardware accelerator but what if there are not enough games to utilize its gaming capability. It would have been a perfect gaming mobile if it had included N-GAGE support.

Sony Ericsson "IDOU"

Sony Ericsson surprised us by announcing yet to be fully functional prototype, code named "IDOU". Its good to see that SE is finally moving around after the down fall of UIQ. No doubt this phone is the flagship device of the company which is dragging in the meltdown of world economy.

It is the first 12MP camera-phone which has seen its light. I don't know why companies are after MP race. Who needs this 12MP camera in a phone after all considering the size limitation of the phone it is very hard to fit a larger sensor. And without a sizable sensor its hard to produce vivid images. Another thing is size of picture which increases as MP increases so it will take more time to resize, transfer via bluetooth, or upload. They haven't said anything about video recording but i hope it will be at least VGA@30fps. The good thing about camera is that it has xenon flash which is very useful considering that most of us shoot more indoor than outdoor. It also features Geo-tagging, Face and Smile detection.

The next thing about this phone is its Touchscreen(640x360 pixels, 3.5 inch). It is unclear whether it will be capacitive or resistive screen . It packs Symbian UI which is still being developed by Symbian foundation. All types of connectivity options have been taken care in this phone still it looks beautiful and compact with dimension 111 x 54 x 15 mm.Release date and price is yet to be known. It seems that this phone won't land on to the market before September-2009.
